Microsoft has announced a new compact desktop PC called the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box at its Build 2026 developer conference. The new device is designed for developers and AI workloads and appears to be Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s Mac Studio.
The announcement comes a day after Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra, another device powered by Nvidia’s new RTX Spark platform. While both products use the same chipset, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is designed to deliver higher performance in a desktop form factor.
The mini PC is powered by Nvidia’s RTX Spark processor, which combines a 20-core ARM CPU with 6,144 Blackwell CUDA cores. Since the system does not have the thermal limitations of a laptop, Microsoft can run the chip at up to 100W, allowing it to deliver more performance than its laptop counterpart.
One of the most interesting features of the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is its memory configuration. Microsoft plans to offer the device with up to 128GB of unified memory. This makes it suitable for developers working on AI models, machine learning projects, and other memory-intensive workloads.
The desktop comes in a compact aluminium chassis and offers a decent selection of connectivity options. Users get an Ethernet port for networking, HDMI for display output, a 3.5mm audio jack, two USB Type-A ports, and two USB Type-C ports.

The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box also marks Microsoft’s return to developer-focused desktop hardware. The company previously launched the Windows Dev Kit 2023, but the product failed to gain significant traction and was eventually discontinued.
Microsoft has not revealed pricing for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box yet. The company says the device will become available sometime in 2026 through its online store. Interested users can sign up through Microsoft’s website to receive updates about availability and additional details.
