Meta has confirmed that it will stop supporting the VR version of Horizon Worlds later this year. The platform will be removed from Quest headsets and will continue only as a mobile app.

The company has shared a clear timeline for this. By March 31, 2026, Horizon Worlds and its events will no longer appear in the store on Quest devices. Some popular worlds will also stop working in VR around the same time. Users can still access other worlds for a short period, but full access will end on June 15, 2026. After that, Horizon Worlds will only be available on Android and iOS through the Meta Horizon app.

This confirms that Meta is no longer planning to keep Horizon Worlds as a VR-first experience. The company says it has seen better response on mobile, which is why it is putting more focus there.

Horizon Worlds was one of Meta’s main projects to build a social virtual space. It allowed users to create avatars, explore different worlds, and join events. At one point, it was seen as a key part of Meta’s larger metaverse plans.

Along with this change, Meta is also removing some features linked to Horizon Worlds. The Hyperscape Capture beta, which allowed users to create and share 3D scans of real places, will no longer support sharing or group experiences. Users can still create and view these captures, but the social part is being removed.

There are also changes to subscription benefits. Horizon-related perks like digital items, avatars, and in-world purchases will be removed from Meta’s subscription plans. However, the main gaming benefits under the subscription will remain unchanged.

This decision is not surprising. VR still has a limited user base compared to smartphones. Even though Meta has invested heavily in its Quest lineup, most users still spend more time on mobile devices. Building a social platform on mobile makes it easier to reach more people.

At the same time, Meta has been putting more attention on areas like AI and smart glasses. These products have a wider reach and can grow faster. Moving Horizon Worlds to mobile fits into that direction.

This also shows that building a large social platform inside VR is still not easy. Many companies have tried similar ideas, but user adoption has remained limited.
