Meta has started testing a new subscription plan called Instagram Plus on Instagram. The feature is not widely available yet, but early signs suggest the company is experimenting with paid perks for regular users.
According to user reports, prompts for Instagram Plus are already showing up for some users. This looks like a limited test for now, but it clearly shows the direction Meta is moving in.

From the screenshots shared online, Instagram Plus focuses on giving users more control and extra features. These include:
- Multiple audience options for Stories
- Ability to see who rewatched your Stories
- Search within viewer lists
- Preview Stories before posting
- Extend Story visibility duration
- Send Super Hearts
- Spotlight Stories for better reach
Meta is also offering a one-month free trial, which is a common strategy. Users get used to the features first and then decide whether to continue with the subscription.
If you look closely, these are not must-have features. But they are useful enough that once you start using them, it becomes hard to go back. Seeing who rewatched your Story or having more control over your audience sounds small, but it changes how you use the app. After a while, the free version may feel limited.
This is a very common strategy. Give users something extra, make them like it, and then put it behind a subscription.
Initial reactions have been mixed. Some users like the idea, especially creators who want more insights and control. But a lot of users are calling these features unnecessary. Many feel that Instagram is trying to charge for things that should have been free.
This is not surprising because we have seen similar paid subscription in other platforms. X introduced paid features like verification, premium tools, and ad-free options. Snapchat launched Snapchat+ with exclusive features and has already seen strong adoption. Now Meta seems to be exploring a similar path with Instagram.
Social media platforms are becoming more like services than just free apps. They need consistent revenue, and subscriptions are the easiest way to achieve that. The free version will always remain, but there is a risk that it will slowly become limited over time.
Right now, Instagram Plus is optional. You can ignore it and continue using the app as usual. But once users start adopting these features, the gap between free and paid experiences may increase.
If this test is successful, Meta could roll out Instagram Plus globally. We may also see more features added only for paid users. There could also be bundled subscriptions across Instagram and Facebook.
