Elon Musk has announced a new chip manufacturing project called Terafab. The project is a joint effort between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Musk claims it could become the largest chip manufacturing facility ever built.
He shared details during a livestream on X. The main goal of Terafab is to produce chips at a massive scale to meet future demand from its companies.
Musk said the current chip supply is not enough. He mentioned that existing partners like TSMC, Samsung, and Micron can only meet a small part of the demand. According to him, it is around 2 percent of what Tesla and SpaceX may need in the future.
The project is expected to cost at least $20 billion. It will begin with an Advanced Technology Fab in Austin, Texas, where Tesla already has its headquarters.
Musk said Terafab will produce two types of chips. One will be used for Earth-based applications like Full Self-Driving and humanoid robots such as Optimus. The second type will be more powerful and durable chips designed for space use.
This also connects with another ambitious idea from Musk. Earlier this year, SpaceX filed an application to launch a large number of satellites to build an orbital data center. These chips could play a key role in powering such infrastructure.
Musk described Terafab as a step towards much bigger goals, including building a “galactic civilization” and using large-scale computing powered by solar energy.
However, such claims should be taken with caution. Musk is known for making bold promises. Projects like the Hyperloop, fully autonomous driving, and even early Cybertruck expectations have faced delays or did not fully meet initial claims.
Still, I am optimistic because Terafab shows a clear direction. Musk wants to reduce dependence on third-party chip makers and build an in-house supply chain. This could give his companies more control over performance, costs, and future innovation.
