Bethesda has announced that it will officially shut down the servers for The Elder Scrolls: Blades on June 30. The free-to-play mobile RPG will no longer be playable after that date. This marks the end of its six-year run.

The game has already been delisted from major platforms, including the App Store, Google Play Store, and Nintendo eShop. This means new players can no longer download the game, and existing players only have a limited time left before the servers go offline.

When The Elder Scrolls: Blades first launched in early access, it showed strong initial traction. The game crossed over 1 million downloads on iOS within the first week, which was a solid start for a mobile spin-off of a popular franchise. However, that early momentum did not last. Over time, player interest dropped, and the game failed to achieve the long-term success seen by mainline Elder Scrolls titles.

The situation became clearer when the game received a “Generally Unfavorable” rating on Metacritic, with many critics pointing out repetitive gameplay and aggressive microtransactions as key issues.

Before shutting down, Bethesda is offering some final benefits to existing players. Players will receive free bundles of Gems and Sigils, and all in-game items are now available for just one unit of currency. This is a common approach in live-service shutdowns, allowing players to experience everything before the game goes offline.

This is not the first time Bethesda has shut down a spin-off from the Elder Scrolls universe. The company had earlier discontinued The Elder Scrolls: Legends by stopping development in 2019 and eventually shutting down its servers in January 2025.

For players who still want a mobile experience set in the Elder Scrolls universe, The Elder Scrolls: Castles remains available as an alternative.

The shutdown was expected. The mobile gaming market has become highly competitive, and players now expect more polished gameplay with fair monetization. Games that rely heavily on repetitive mechanics and microtransactions often struggle to retain users.

The early success of Blades showed that there was strong interest in an Elder Scrolls mobile game. But sustaining that interest required better gameplay depth and a more balanced monetization model.

This update also teaches an important lesson. Even big brands cannot guarantee success in mobile gaming. Strong IP can drive initial downloads, but long-term retention depends on gameplay quality and user experience.
