Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro. The company has also confirmed that it has no plans to launch any new Mac Pro hardware in the future. This marks the end of one of Apple’s most iconic professional desktop lines.

The Mac Pro has already been removed from Apple’s website. The buy page now redirects users to the main Mac section, where there is no mention of the device anymore.

The Mac Pro has gone through multiple generations since its early days. It was first introduced in 2006 as a replacement for the Power Mac G5. Over the years, it became known as Apple’s most powerful and most flexible desktop computer.

The 2019 version, often called the “cheese grater” design, brought back full modularity after Apple’s experimental 2013 cylindrical Mac Pro. It allowed users to upgrade components like GPU, RAM, and storage easily. This made it very different from most other Macs, which are usually not upgradeable.

In 2023, Apple updated it with the M2 Ultra chip. However, that version lost some of the flexibility that earlier Intel models offered, especially when it came to GPU upgrades.

The Mac Pro was designed for professionals who needed extreme performance and customization. It had support for multiple high-end GPUs (in Intel models), large memory capacity for heavy workloads, multiple PCIe slots for expansion cards, high-end cooling for sustained performance, and easy access to internal components. This made it a preferred choice for users working on demanding tasks like 4K and 8K video editing, 3D rendering, music production, and scientific computing.

Studios, production houses, and enterprise users relied on the Mac Pro because they could configure it exactly as per their needs. It targeted Video editors, filmmakers, 3D artists, artists, animators, developers and Scientific & research professionals. The Mac Pro was never meant for regular consumers.

With the Mac Pro gone, the Mac Studio is now clearly positioned as Apple’s top desktop for professionals. After this change, Apple’s desktop lineup now includes:

The Mac Pro had already started losing its relevance in recent years. The shift to Apple Silicon changed everything. These chips offer high performance without needing large, upgradeable systems. Also, the newer Mac Studio offered similar or better performance at a much lower price. This made the Mac Pro harder to justify. With features like connecting multiple Macs using Thunderbolt 5 for high-performance workflows, Apple is also offering new ways to scale performance.

The Mac Pro was a symbol of power and flexibility in Apple’s lineup. Its discontinuation shows that Apple is moving away from modular systems. For most users, this change will not matter much.
