New data from SimilarWeb shows a clear change in global AI website usage at the start of 2026. The latest Global AI Tracker reveals that Google Gemini is growing fast, while ChatGPT is slowly losing market share, even though it still leads by a wide margin.
ChatGPT is still the most visited AI website in the world. As of January 2, 2026, it holds 64.5 percent of total AI website traffic. However, this number has been going down steadily over the past year. Around twelve months ago, ChatGPT controlled 86.7 percent of the market. Six months ago, it dropped to 78.6 percent. Three months ago, it was at 74.1 percent. Now, it has fallen below the 65 percent mark for the first time.

Google Gemini is the biggest gainer in the latest data. It now holds 21.5 percent of global AI website traffic, crossing the important 20 percent milestone. A year ago, Gemini’s share was just 5.7 percent. Six months ago, it reached 8.6 percent. Three months ago, it jumped to 12.9 percent. The steady rise shows that more users are turning to Gemini for everyday AI tasks.
Grok has also shown good growth and now holds 3.4 percent of global traffic. It has crossed the 3 percent mark and is slowly catching up to DeepSeek. DeepSeek currently stands at 3.7 percent. While its growth has slowed slightly, it continues to stay ahead of Grok for now.
Perplexity and Claude both hold 2.0 percent of global AI website traffic. Their user base has remained mostly stable over recent months. Microsoft Copilot is at the bottom of the list with a 1.1 percent share and has seen very limited growth compared to other platforms.
This report clearly shows that the Gen AI market is slowly becoming more balanced. ChatGPT is still the clear leader, but its dominance is no longer absolute. A drop from over 86 percent to nearly 64 percent in one year shows that users are willing to try alternatives. Gemini’s growth is the most interesting part of this data. Crossing the 20 percent mark suggests strong user trust, likely driven by deep Google integration and steady feature updates. At the same time, smaller players like Grok and DeepSeek are also finding their space.
