Microsoft is winding down its Sway desktop app for Windows 10 and 11, eight years after it discontinued the iOS version. Launched in 2014, Sway was designed as a creative tool for making presentations, interactive reports, newsletters, and more. Users can combine text, images, videos, and other content in a visually appealing way.

The app became fully available for Windows 10 in 2015, and the company kept adding features like support for photos and password protection. Despite its usefulness, Microsoft has now decided to retire the Win32 desktop client to streamline the app experience and focus on the web version.

According to a notice on the Microsoft 365 admin portal, the desktop app will stop working after June 1, 2026. Microsoft said this move will simplify app management while keeping all features and content accessible through the web at sway.cloud.microsoft. Users will still be able to sign in with a Microsoft account and access their Sway presentations just as before.

Microsoft assures that all existing content will remain intact and fully functional through the browser, with no loss of features or usability.

This change reflects Microsoft’s broader push to shift desktop tools to web-based platforms for offering easier access and updates without the need for local installations.
