Sony has announced its latest financial results for the quarter ending September 30, 2025, and revealed strong momentum for the PlayStation brand. The company confirmed that PlayStation 5 shipments have reached 84.2 million units worldwide, confirming its position as one of the fastest-selling consoles in history.
During this quarter alone, 3.9 million PS5 units were shipped, which is slightly higher than the 3.8 million units shipped during the same period last year. This steady growth shows that demand for the console remains strong, even nearly five years after launch.
Sony also shared updates about its online ecosystem. As of September 30, 2025, PlayStation Network (PSN) had 119 million monthly active users. This marks an increase of three million compared to the same period last year. This growth highlights how deeply the PS5 and PS4 platforms remain connected to digital services, online multiplayer, and subscription models like PlayStation Plus.
Game sales were another bright spot in Sony’s report. Combined PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 software sales reached 80.3 million units during the quarter, up by 2.6 million year-over-year. Out of this, 6.3 million units were first-party titles, games developed or published by Sony itself, showing an increase of one million compared to last year.
Digital distribution continues to dominate, with 72 percent of total software sales coming from full-game digital downloads. That is two percent higher than the previous year, confirming the ongoing shift toward digital purchases.
Sony also shared an update on Ghost of Yotei, one of its latest major releases. The game has sold through 3.3 million copies as of November 2, 2025, just 32 days after launch. This makes it one of the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusives of the year.
The strong sales performance shows that Ghost of Yotei has struck a chord with players, continuing Sony’s streak of successful single-player releases following hits like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and God of War: Ragnarök.
With the holiday season approaching, Sony is expected to maintain strong sales momentum for both hardware and software. The PS5’s growing install base, combined with upcoming exclusives and the rise of digital sales, suggests that the platform’s ecosystem remains healthy and profitable.
