Threads Introduces ‘Ghost Posts’ That Vanish After 24 Hours

Meta has added a new feature to Threads called “ghost posts.” These are temporary posts that disappear automatically after 24 hours. It seems similar to Instagram Stories or Snapchat Snaps. The idea is to let users share short-lived thoughts without worrying about them staying online forever.

Ghost posts will appear on the main feed like normal posts. Other users can like, reply, and interact with them, but only the original poster will be able to see those likes and replies. This gives users more privacy while still keeping the interaction element alive.

Interestingly, the replies to ghost posts will not show up publicly. Instead, they will go straight to the user’s inbox. However, this feature may work differently for each user, depending on their message settings. If someone only allows DMs from followed accounts, they may miss out on replies from others.

Meta says the feature is designed to help users “share unfiltered thoughts and fresh takes without the pressure of permanence or polish.” And that makes sense. Threads, just like Instagram, is trying to make posting more casual and less curated.

If we look at the bigger picture, this move feels like Meta’s attempt to boost engagement on Threads. Instagram Stories became a massive success because people love sharing quick updates that disappear. Threads might be trying to bring that same vibe to a text-based platform.

But there’s some risk here. Twitter once tried a similar feature called Fleets, and it did not work. It was removed less than a year after launch because people did not use it much. Text-based social media users usually prefer posts that can be seen, shared, and quoted over time.

Still, Threads is growing fast, and Meta has been experimenting with features that make the app more fun and less formal. Ghost posts could attract users who hesitate to post publicly or worry about old posts resurfacing later.
