Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia developed by his artificial intelligence company xAI. The project aims to be an alternative to Wikipedia, using AI to create and edit content while promising to reduce bias and errors that Musk believes exist in current online knowledge platforms.

The name Grokipedia comes from “Grok,” xAI’s chatbot, and “pedia,” taken from the word encyclopedia. It reflects Musk’s vision of creating a modern, AI-driven knowledge platform that continuously learns and improves.

Grokipedia officially went live on October 27, 2025, with version 0.1, hosting over 800,000 articles at launch. The project was first announced by Musk on September 30, when he called it “a massive improvement over Wikipedia.”

According to xAI, Grokipedia uses the same AI technology behind the Grok chatbot. The system generates, edits, and fact-checks articles in real time. It also marks information as true, partially true, false, or incomplete, allowing users to know how reliable a piece of content might be.

The platform supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, German, and French. It is designed to be open-source and freely accessible to everyone. Musk described Grokipedia as “a knowledge base without bias and censorship.”

Elon Musk has long criticized Wikipedia for what he sees as political and ideological bias. He once referred to it as “Wokipedia” and argued that it no longer represents balanced knowledge. Grokipedia, he says, is an effort to fix that.

In Musk’s view, AI can help identify misinformation and errors faster than human editors. However, critics argue that relying on AI to determine what is true could create new types of bias and inaccuracies.

According to xAI, the goal is to make Grokipedia a place where information can evolve faster than on traditional encyclopedias, while maintaining transparency about the reliability of each entry.

Despite the hype, Grokipedia’s launch has not been free from controversy. Several reports claim that many of its early articles were directly copied or adapted from Wikipedia. Some pages even carry the disclaimer, “Adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.”

This has led to questions about originality and ethics. There are also concerns about neutrality. Some early entries reportedly include opinions or interpretations that reflect Musk’s personal views or those of his supporters.

Grokipedia is still in its early stages. The platform currently lacks clear community editing tools like Wikipedia’s volunteer-based system. It also remains unclear how xAI will handle fact-checking, corrections, and disputes over information accuracy.

Experts believe that for Grokipedia to gain trust, it will need to be transparent about its sources, editorial processes, and how its AI models make decisions.
