Gearbox Software has announced that the release of Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2, originally scheduled for October 3, 2025, has been delayed indefinitely. The studio cited the need for additional development and polish to ensure the best possible experience for players. This decision also aims to align the Switch 2 release with the upcoming cross-save feature, which is currently in development.
In line with Nintendo’s policy, all digital pre-orders for the Switch 2 version will be canceled. Customers can initiate the cancellation process themselves or wait for it to occur automatically starting Friday, September 26. For physical pre-orders, Gearbox advises reaching out to the respective retailer.
The delay comes just weeks after the game’s initial launch on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. While the game has been generally well-received, some players have reported performance issues, particularly on PC, leading to a “Mixed” rating on Steam. In response, Gearbox released a 758MB patch on September 18 to address crashes, stuttering, and progression blockers, marking the first of many planned weekly updates.

It is also worth noting that it became the biggest Borderlands game on Steam within hours of launch.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 was anticipated to be a significant title for the console’s fall lineup. However, Gearbox’s commitment to delivering a polished experience has led to this unexpected delay.
