Spotify is rolling out a new feature called Messages. The new feature has been designed to make sharing your favorite music, podcasts, and audiobooks with friends and family easier than ever. The company says that recommendations from friends are one of the most powerful ways people discover new content. With Messages, Spotify users now have a dedicated space to share what they love and chat about it in real time.
The feature is starting to roll out this week for Free and Premium users aged 16 and above on mobile devices in select markets. Whether it’s sending a new song to a friend, sharing a podcast with your family, or swapping audiobook recommendations for your book club, Messages makes it simple to stay connected over shared interests.
Messages are private, one-on-one conversations where you can send Spotify content and react with emojis or text. To start a conversation, you just tap the share icon while listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook, select a friend, and hit send. Suggested contacts will appear based on past interactions, collaborative playlists, or shared Family and Duo plans.
Spotify also assures users that Messages are secure and private. Conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest, and users can accept or reject message requests, block accounts, or report content that violates Spotify’s rules. The platform uses proactive detection technology and human moderators to maintain a safe environment for users.
This feature is meant to complement existing sharing options on Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, and other platforms, not replace them. Spotify believes Messages will make discovering new music, podcasts, and audiobooks more social and interactive, while giving users control over their conversations.
