Meta-owned Instagram has copied another feature from TikTok and added the ability to speed up Reels. Users can now fast-forward videos at 2x speed by long-pressing on the right or left side of the screen. This feature will be helpful while watching longer content on the platform.

Originally, Instagram Reels only supported 15-second videos. Over time, as short-form content became more popular, it extended video limits and now allows Reels up to 3 minutes long. With longer videos, users tend to lose interest quickly, so Instagram is introducing fast playback to keep engagement high. This makes it easy for viewers to skip to the interesting parts of the content.
Instagram has copied several features of TikTok. Some of the biggest features include Remix (TikTok’s Duet feature), Longer videos, and now fast-forward playback.
The ability to speed up videos suggests the shift in how people consume content. But short form content has already affected people’s attention spans. So, most people will now can’t concentrate watching longer videos. This could the reason why watching content at 2x speed will be preferred.
