Windows 11 gets Improved Search Capabilities for Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.2992 (KB5050083) to the Dev Channel. The new update brings exciting new features and improvements for Windows Insiders. The primary focus is on offering an enhanced Windows Search experience, especially for Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.

Improved Windows Search Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs leverages semantic indexing to allow users to find documents, photos, and settings with ease. Users can now search using natural language instead of exact file names or content. For example, type “bridge at sunset” to locate relevant images. Search for “change my theme” directly in the Settings app and it will provide a direct link to the page where you can change the setting.

The feature uses the 40+ TOPS NPU in Copilot+ PCs to ensure the search enhancements are available even offline.

Currently, the advanced search feature is limited to files saved locally in indexed locations. However, future updates will extend this capability to cloud storage providers like OneDrive.

The company has added “Refine” in Click to Do to allow users to proofread and refine text efficiently. It has also added a “New Folder” option to the context menu in the navigation pane. Magnifier gets a new keyboard shortcut (CTRL + ALT + Minus) for toggling between current zoom and 1X zoom has been introduced.

The update also fixes several issues including date/time properties of files being updated unexpectedly and search-related bugs. It also fixes an issue where HDDs were incorrectly identified as SSDs and Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist file (DriverSiPolicy.p7b) to mitigate BYOVD attacks.
