As the 30th anniversary of PlayStation approaches on December 3, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has launched a PlayStation history timeline website to celebrate the milestone. The website offers a detailed look at the evolution of the iconic PlayStation Console, key moments, statistics, and achievements.
The website reveals that PlayStation 2 is the most successful gaming console selling over 160 million units. It is important to note that former SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan also confirmed this number during an episode of the Official PlayStation Podcast in March.
Here are the sales numbers shared on the anniversary timeline:
- PlayStation (1994 to 2006): 102 million units sold
- PlayStation 2 (since 2000): 160 million units sold
- PlayStation 3 (since 2006): 87 million units sold
- PlayStation 4 (since 2013): 117 million units sold
- PlayStation 5 (since 2020): 65.5 million units sold
These figures highlight PlayStation’s remarkable impact on the gaming industry. The PlayStation 2 stands out not only as Sony’s best-selling gaming console but also as the highest-selling gaming console in history.
The PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are both still available in the market. However, the PlayStation 5 has become the preferred choice for most consumers, thanks to its cutting-edge hardware that enables superior graphics and a more immersive gaming experience.
Visit the PlayStation history timeline website to relive the journey and celebrate 30 years of PlayStation.
