Updated on January 2026: This article has been updated to include the now confirmed release date.

Rockstar Games announced Grand Theft Auto VI in December 2023. GTA 6 will be the eighth main game in the Grand Theft Auto franchise and will succeed GTA V. At the time of the announcement, the company did not confirm an exact release date and only said that Grand Theft Auto VI, also referred to as GTA 6, would launch in 2025.

The first trailer of GTA 6 was released on the same day. Within 12 hours, it became the most-viewed non-music video game trailer on YouTube. Within two days, it crossed the lifetime views of the GTA V trailer and later surpassed Minecraft to become the second most-watched video game trailer ever.

The story of GTA 6 is set in the fictional open-world state of Leonida. The trailer suggests two playable characters, Lucia and Jason. Lucia is shown taking part in robberies and high-speed chases. Rockstar is expected to deliver major improvements in graphics, physics, and realism, along with new gameplay systems and better vehicle handling.

After several months with no official updates, fans began waiting for a second trailer. In November, an X user @GTAVI_Countdown claimed that Rockstar could release the second trailer on November 22, citing internal patterns. Rockstar Games did not confirm this, and the claim remained speculation.
