At Apple’s ‘Let Loose’ event, the company introduced its latest M4 chip. Apple says that M4 has advanced AI capabilities and could rival AI chips from Intel, Qualcomm, and AMD.
Apple’s M4 chip is built on second-generation 3nm technology. It has a 10-core CPU (four performance cores and 6 efficiency cores) and a 10-core GPU. The chip promises a 50% increase in performance compared to the M2 and also has improved power efficiency. It also boasts four times more graphics performance than M2. M4 also supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, dynamic caching, and hardware-accelerated mesh shading.
The chip also has a new Neural Processing Unit for advanced AI tasks. The NPU has 16 cores and is ’60x faster’ than its first-generation NPU that was introduced with A11 Bionic. The NPU can handle 38 trillion operations to support more complex and intelligent applications.
Apple’s M4 chip will power new iPad Pro tables that have also been launched today.
