Do you still remember Beeper, the company behind Beeper Mini, the iMessage app for Android? Beeper has now been acquired by Automattic, owner of WordPress. The deal is worth $125 million.

Beeper Mini provided iMessage functionalities including read receipts, typing indicators, reactions, and more. Apple wasn’t happy with the app and blocked it. However, the company tried workarounds but later gave up.

Automattic has no plans to revive Beeper Mini, but it wants to take Beeper to make a universal inbox where users can access conversations on different platforms.

Automattic already bought Texts.com last year. So, it is the second acquisition in the messaging space. Now Beeper and Texts.com teams will join together to merge their product into a single platform.

Texts.com is a single platform to have conversations from different messaging platforms in one place. It supports WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn, Signal, iMessage, and more. The app is also offering some additional features like AI-generated responses and summaries.

It is also worth noting that Matt, Automattic’s CEO, was also an early investor in Beeper.
