Canva acquires Affinity

Canva has acquired Affinity, a creative tools company based in the U.K. The deal will help Canva compete well against Adobe. Although the company didn’t reveal financial terms, Bloomberg confirmed that the deal was worth approximately $380 million U.S.

“Trusted by more than three million creative professionals across the globe, Affinity’s award-winning suite of professional design software has become a sought-after solution for everything from photo editing to complex graphic and vector design. Together, we’re setting our sights on empowering every kind of team and organization to achieve their goals,” says Canva.

Affinity owns popular software including Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher. These software are available for Windows, Mac, and iPad. If you look at these software, these are similar to Adobe’s Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.

Canva is a popular design platform that lets users edit photos, make social media posts, and make videos. The platform boasts around 170 million monthly global users. Canva offers online editing tools and has no desktop apps for creative professionals. After acquiring Affinity, the company will have desktop software.

Affinity apps have over three million users globally. Although these software are not as popular as Adobe’s software, we shouldn’t underestimate their capabilities.

The deal has already been closed and Affinity’s 90 employees will join Canva.
