Proton Mail, the encrypted email service, has introduced its native desktop app for Windows and MacOS. Users could access Proton Mail on the desktop through a web browser or by configuring it in a desktop email client such as Outlook, or Thunderbird.

The desktop app offers offline access access to emails and a seamless integration with Proton Calendar. It comes with a modern design to provide a clutter-free experience.

During its initial beta phase, the Proton Mail desktop app is exclusively available to users on the Proton Visionary plan. This plan was only available to users who have been using Proton Mail since the early days of Proton Mail. However, the company has announced the temporary reopening of Visionary plans to new users until January 3, 2024.

The full rollout of Proton Mail for desktops is expected in early 2024. It is also worth noting that the new email client will also be open-source.
