Google Maps navigation on WearOS now works without a phone

Galaxy Watch5 Series

Google has updated the Google Maps app for WearOS to offer navigation without a phone. You need an active internet connection to get navigation on Maps without a phone connected to a watch. That means you need a WearOS smartwatch with LTE connectivity for using this feature.

Pixel Watch and Galaxy 5 have an LTE version and users can subscribe to a cellular plan to get data connectivity on the watch. If you have a smartwatch without LTE connectivity, you can still use turn-by-turn Google Maps navigation but you need to connect the watch to a Wi-Fi network.

Open Maps on your watch. Then use the voice or keyboard tool to enter the destination. Select the mode of transportation and start your trip.

Google confirms that the standalone Google Maps navigation is only for Wear OS 3 smartwatches. If you have a compatible watch, start the navigation directly on your watch when you want directions.

Getting directions on your wrist is one of the most useful features of having a smartwatch. It is better than pulling your phone out to check turn-by-turn directions. With Wear OS 3, the Maps app comes pre-installed and has also been improved a lot.
