The Government of India has given esports the recognition it deserves. On Tuesday, The President of India, Droupadi Murmu asked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Sports Ministry to include “e-Sports as part of multi-sports events”. IT ministry will be the nodal agency for matters related to online gaming.

India’s sports ministry will now include esports in its curriculum.

Back in August 2022, the Indian DOTA 2 team won bronze at the first Commonwealth Esports Championship held in Birmingham. Esports will also be the part of Asian Games next year. International Olympic Association (IOC) will also host the inaugural Olympic Esports Week next year in June.

So, we know that esports has a bright future and will be mainstream in the coming years. Esports is already popular in China, Europe, and the US, but Indian players don’t have many opportunities. Most gamers in India use mobile phones, so most esports events host mobile games such as PUBG, and Battlegrounds India.

The esports market was valued at USD 1.22 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 21.0% in 2022-2029. Now that India has also recognized Esports as a multi-sport event, it will see a big boost in the country. India has around 430 million gamers and the number is estimated to grow to 650 million by 2025.
