Google on Friday announced bringing its client-side encryption to Gmail in beta for Workspace and education customers. The client-side encryption in Gmail ensures the safety of data and attachments in Gmail. The feature lets organizations encrypt data with their own cryptographic keys. The data can only be decrypted on the client-side using keys managed by a cloud key management service.
Administrators can set up an encryption key service through one of Google’s partners including Flowcrypt, Fortanix, Futurex, Stormshield, Thales, or Virtru. Organizations can also build their own encryption key service using Google’s client-side encryption API.
Once the feature is enabled by the admins, users can click the lock icon and select additional encryption to encrypt their emails.
Google is now accepting beta applications from organizations that want to allow their customers to use client-side encryption.
The feature is not available for users with personal Google accounts.
Google has already added the same feature in Google Drive last year and Google Meet back in August 2022. The company recently tested it in Google Calendar.
