As already scheduled, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated 5G services in India at the sixth edition of the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC 2022) held in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. For now, 5G is being launched in select countries in the first phase. Telecom companies will keep rolling it out to other cities in the coming months.

Soon after the launch, Narendra Modi also experienced 5G at the demo zone in presence of representatives of all three major telecom operators including Airtel, Jio, and VI. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union minister for Electronics and Information Technology, was also present at the event.

“Very proud of what we’ve demonstrated. To COAI (Cellular Operators Assn of India) & DoT (Dept of Telecom), I can say we are ready to take leadership & Indian Mobile Congress should now become Asian Mobile Congress & Global Mobile Congress,” Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani said at the launch today.

Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune are the first 13 Indian cities that are getting 5G services in the first phase. Other cities and towns will get the 5G network within two years.

5G is the next generation of cellular network technology that promises wider coverage, low latency, and faster internet speed. If we compare 5G with 4G, 5G has more capacity and lower latency than 4G. It uses a spectrum better than 4G and is significantly faster than 4G. 5G is expected to revolutionize healthcare, education, IoT, autonomous cars, and smart cities.
