Twitter has increased the price of its premium subscription service Twitter Blue. The service now costs $4.99 per month in the US while it was initially launched at $2.99 per month. The company confirmed that the price hike is only for new customers. Existing subscribers will not be charged the higher amount until October.

Twitter will send an additional notice to existing subscribers before charging the new prices. Existing customers will also get an opportunity to cancel the subscription before the new price goes into effect.

The company says that the price hike will fund the creation of new services and improve existing features.

“This change helps us continue to build some of the features you’ve been asking for, improve upon the current ones you already love, and sustain our mission of supporting journalism,” the email from Twitter said.

Twitter Blue subscription offers some additional features like 30-second undo tweet window, the option to organize tweets in a bookmark folder, the ability to change your profile picture to an NFT, and customize Twitter with themes and icons. Users also read articles without ads in some publications.
