Snapchat to limit friends recommendation for teens

Snapchat

Popular messaging app Snapchat is changing its friends’ recommendation feature for teens. Now, it will make it harder for adult strangers to find teens by limited friend recommendations. The change will stop showing an account of 13 to 17-year-olds in ‘Quick Add’ unless there are a certain number of accounts common.

With this change, the company wants to prevent strangers from adding a teen of specified age they don’t know. This feature was abused a lot by malicious users in past. Several incidents have been discovered where this feature was used by drug dealers to contact teens and sell them the drugs/

The company also claims that it has improved its ability to proactively detect “drug-related content” on its platform and has successfully detected 88 percent of content related to drugs. It also has a team that works directly with law enforcement agencies on this issue.

Snap says that it has zero tolerance for drug dealing on Snapchat and will keep working to keep the community safe on Snapchat. It will keep making efforts to make products safer for minors.

The company is also working to improve parental tools with a goal to offer more insight to parents about who their teens are talking to on Snapchat while still respecting their privacy.
