Google has updated the Gmail app for Android and iOS. The new update brings audio calls to feature powered by Google Chat. So, you can name mike one to one calls to any of your Google contact.

It was possible to start calls within the Gmail app even before this update. Now that involved sending an invite to a Google Meet video conferencing call. This was a pain for making a casual one-on-one conversation. Now there are phone and video icons to make one-on-one audio and video calls directly to contact within Google chat.

To be able to make calls, you need to enable Google Chat in Gmail. For this, tap the Menu icon and go to Settings. Here select the Google account. Under “General,” next to “Chat,” turn on Show the chat and spaces tab.

Now go to the Chat tab and open any conversation. You will now see an option for making audio and video calls.
