Instagram launched the standalone messaging app Threads back in 2019. Now the company has decided to shut down the app by the end of December 2021.

Instagram will also start notifying Threads users with an in-app notification starting November 23. It will recommend users start using Instagram to send messages to friends.

Threads was basically a messaging app that wanted users to stay in touch with their friends all the time. The app lets users set automatic statuses based on location. It also lets users quickly capture photos and videos to send to friends.

As per data from Sensor Tower, Threads has around 13.7 million global installs from across the App Store and Google Play Store. We have no information about active users who prefer using Threads for messaging their Instagram friends.

The app didn’t get attention. Most users prefer using Instagram for messaging their friends. This is the reason why the company decided to shut it down.

Meta has already given users an option to connect Messenger and Instagram. So, Instagram users can also send messages to Facebook friends and vice versa. This also brought message reactions to Instagram users. The company also has plans to add WhatsApp to this cross-messaging system.
