During Google I/O’s Keynote, Google unveiled a new concept project called ‘Project Starline.’ This project is still in the works but is quite interesting. It lets you have two-way communication from other people just like the other person is sitting right in front of you.
This feels like having a magic window to see your friends and relatives in front of you while they are at a thousands miles from you.
Project Starline combines research in computer vision, machine learning, spatial audio, and real-time compression to make things possible. The big display feels like a mirror. It uses a ‘breakthrough light field display system’ that creates a sense of volume and depth. So, you don’t need any glasses or headsets for experiencing this realistic virtual meeting.
Google has used custom-built hardware and highly specialized equipment for making this project. Currently, the company is testing it in a few of its offices. Google believes that the project could be the future of person-to-person communication.
This project is still in works, so I cannot say when it could be available for mass ise. It is also not clear if this will be available only for commercial use or also for personal use.
