Last year in November, WhatsApp introduced disappearing messages that are deleted after 7 days. Now the messaging app is testing Self-Destructing images. These images will be deleted after the export date set by the sender.

WABetaInfo spotted this feature and share the screenshot on Twitter.

If you use this option to send the image to someone, the image won’t be on the receiver’s phone after the expiry date. The image will be deleted from the conversation and phone. The recipient will also be notified that the image will auto-expire after a certain time.

It seems WhatsApp has not added the restriction to prevent screenshots. So, someone receiving self-destructing image can still capture screenshots to keep the image forever. There is no notification telling you that the recipient captured the screenshot of your self-destructing image, So, adding screenshot protection should be there.

The feature is still in beta and is being tested. So, I cannot say when it will be available to all users in the stable app.
