As per new reports, Facebook is working on a smartwatch to take on Apple Watch. The smartwatch is currently in development and will be released next year. Not many details are available, but a source close to the development revealed that the smartwatch will run on an open-source version of Google’s Android software i.e. Wear OS.

We can already guess that the watch will have deeper integration of Facebook’s own messaging service Messenger and WhatsApp. There will be several health and fitness tracking features to rival other fitness trackers available in the market.

The watch will also come with cellular connectivity to offer you data connection on the go.

Facebook’s smartwatch will join the company’s hardware ecosystem that currently includes Portal devices and Oculus virtual reality headsets. Facebook is also working on augmented reality glasses as part of its Project Aria.

Smartwatch handles lots of personal data including messaging and health data. Considering Facebook’s reputation with handling user privacy, it will be interesting to see if users trust the company and try its smartwatch.
