Facebook has finally taken a big step of merging its various messaging platforms. The company has merged Instagram DMs and Messenger chats so users can send message from one app to other.

The app will ask users if they want a new way to Message on Instagram. If you update, Instagram DMs will be replaced by Messenger within the Instagram app. You can then reach your Messenger friends on the Instagram app and vice versa.

Facebook has also made it clear that most of Messenger features will be available to Instagram users. These features include chats, photos, Watch Together, Vanish Mode, Emoji Reactions, Replies, Message forwarding, Animated Message Effects, and Enhanced Reporting.

The company has also taken care of privacy. Users will be able to choose who can contact you on what platforms. You don’t need a Facebook account for talking to Messenger users from Instagram.

Facebook is now rolling out this feature to all Instagram and Messenger users in selected countries. Soon, it will also be expanded globally.

This is a big step towards Zuckerberg’s ambitious plan of bringing WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger together. WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted, so it won’t be easy to merge WhatsApp with Instagram and Messenger. Regulators may also block this step.
