Vivo sold over 13500 smartphones with same IMEI

It seems controversies around China are not going to end soon. In another shocking news, Meerut Police claimed that there are 13557 mobile phones running on the same IMEI. IMEI number should be unique to the phone and it is used to identify the device. So, Meerut Police has registered the case against Vivo and its service center.

This matter came into light when police personnel gave his mobile phone to the staff at cyber crime cell to check why it isn’t working properly even after being repaired recently. The person at cyber cell checked that the IMEI on the phone and box are different. So, he asked the telecom operator about the IMEI. The surprising response from Telecom operator revealed that there are 13557 mobile phones running on the same IMEI.

IMEI or International Mobile Equipment Identity is a unique identity of the device. As per TRAI rules, IMEI should be unique and there couldn’t be more than two phones with the same IMEI. If there are multiple devices with the same IMEI, it is a serious security issue. So, Meerut Police has started an investigation and asked Vivo to submit an explanation and relevant documents.
