As expected, Apple also announced its shift from Intel Chips to its own ARM-based Chips for Macs. Apple calls it Apple silicon. Apple CEO Tim Cook calls it a “historic day for the Mac.”

The company claims that Apple Silicon offers industry-leading performance per watt and higher performance GPUs. So, developers can write more powerful pro apps and high-end games for Macs. It also gets the Neural Engine to make Macs a good machine for developers to use machine learning.

Apple has also introduced macOS Big Sur, which will ensure a smooth and seamless transition to Apple silicon. Existing apps can easily be converted to run on Apple silicon. Apple silicon can also run iOS and iPadOS apps natively.

First Mac with Apple’s own chip will be released later this year. New intel powered Macs are still in the pipeline and complete transition should take two years.

The transition will now make a common architecture across all Apple products. So, developers will find it easy to write and optimize their apps for the entire Apple ecosystem.

The company has also launched the Universal App Quick Start Program for developers with documentation, forums support, beta versions of macOS Big Sur, and Xcode 12.
