Ookla, the company behind the popular Speedtest website and apps has added a free VPN to its Speedtest app for Android and iOS.

For offering this free VPN service, Ookla has partnered with Seattle-based company NetProtect. NetProtect is the leader in internet protection products and owns IPVanish VPN, StrongVPN, SaferVPN Encrypt.me Etc.

To use Ookla’s free VPN, make sure you are using the latest version of the Speedtest app on your phone. Open the app and you see a padlock icon at the bottom of the Speedtest app. Tap on this to open VPN options. Here, you will see a toggle button to enable the VPN.

Ookla’s free VPN

Ookla claims zero logs policy and assigns shareable IP addresses from a pool of over 40,000 addresses for protecting user’s identity.

The free VPN comes with limited data. Customers get 2 GB of free bandwidth per month. The service is still in beta. Once the app is out of beta, Ookla will also offer paid plans to give users more bandwidth.

For now, it provides any random location. You cannot manually choose the VPN location. I hope this option will also be added when the app comes out of beta. Most probably this option will be in paid subscription plans. Let’s see what Ookla has on the cards.
