Foxit PDF Software Company Confirms Data Breach; Suggests Users to Reset Password

Foxit Software, the company behind popular PDF reader software Foxit Reader has confirmed that hackers breached its servers and got access to some user information.

The company has set email to affected users asking them to choose a new password next time they log in. Data accessed includes email, name, phone numbers, passwords, and IP addresses. As per claims, Credit card information is safe and it wasn’t exposed to hackers.

Foxit PDF Software Company Confirms Data Breach

Foxit didn’t confirm if they said customer passwords in hashed or just in plain text. Hashing a password prevents the hacker from reading the exact password keeping it safe. If passwords were available in cleartext or hashed using a weak algorithm, attackers can use them to gain access to users’ accounts on other websites if uses made reusing the password.

Foxit has immediately invalidated the account passwords of all affected users. So, users will have to reset their password to regain access.

The company also didn’t make it clear when this breach occurred. So, we cannot say if this is a new breach or an old one that they discovered recently.

Foxit is now working with a forensic firm to investigate further and has already notified law enforcement and data protection authorities. The company has also hired a security management firm for in-depth analysis of its systems and improve the security
