Google has confirmed that it is killing its smart messaging app Allo and will focus on another app Messages, a messaging app for Android phones.
Allo will continue to work until March 2019. You will also get an option to export your conversation.
Allo was the first messaging app from Google that brought smart replies feature. This feature was based on machine learning that learns from user behavior and recommends the best possible replies of messages. Later, Google also integrated it into Gmail.
Google claims that it has learned a lot from Allo, especially in the field of machine learning.
Google has confirmed that Messages already has over 175 million active users. Now the company will focus on making this app better and give users a simpler communications experience.
“We want every single Android device to have a great default messaging experience. We’ve been working closely with the mobile industry to upgrade SMS so that people around the world can more easily enjoy group chats, share high-res photos, and get read receipts on any Android device,” Google VP of Consumer Communications Products Matt Klainer said.
When the company announced Allo, it also introduced a video calling app Duo. The duo will still be there and Google has promised to bring more quality improvements based on machine learning for making your video calling experience even better.
A few days back, we reported that Google is planning to kill Hangouts. Today, the company has confirmed that they are not killing Hangouts but they are planning to evolve classic Hangouts to make Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. These tools are primarily focused on team collaboration for G Suite customers.
The decision to shut down Allo came after Google discontinued its failed social network Google+. Google+ will no longer be available after August 2019.
