Newton Mail, a popular email client, has decided to shutdown. Rohit Nadhani, Foudner and CEO, announced that the app will be shut down on September 25. It will block all new sign ups and will remove the apps on mentioned date. Current subscribers will not be charged for renewals and pro-rated refunds with be issued. Instructions for that will be confirmed on September 18.

Although the app was good, but it messed a lot around its pricing. It was initially launched as CloudMagic, a free email app. Later it introduced pro subscriptions that didn’t do well. Later they renamed the app to Newton and introduced a mandatory subscription plan: $50 per year. You could only get two weeks of free trial.

It was not the end, In July this year, they introduced $10 per month subscription that was more than the double amount it was already charging. So, users needed to pay $120 a year to get emails on the phone. I don’t think this is worth when we have lots of free apps.

So many existing users started moving away to other email clients just for the cost. I still appreciate the team behind Newton Mail for developing and maintaining such a good email app but confusing users and changing pricing in random way was really a bad thing they could do. Even the price was also higher than one could pay for emails.

If you are an existing happy Newton Mail user, you need to find another good app.

CloudMagic, the company behind Newton will continue to operate and work on new projects. So, we can expect another brilliant project from the company in coming days.
