Sony has just announced a new image sensor ‘IMX586’ for smartphone. This is a CMOS image sensor offering pixel size of 0.8 μm. So, it is possible to get up to 48 megapixels camera in a smartphones. Sony claims that the new sensor will make it possible to capture beautiful, high-resolution images even with a smartphone.

IMX586 sensor uses Quad Bayer color filter array where adjacent 2×2 pixels come in the same color. So, the new sensor delivers both high sensitivity and high resolution. In low-light, it uses signal from the four adjacent pixels to raise sensitivity to level of 1.6 μm pixels. In this way, it can capture bright, low-noise photos and videos.
