Sony IMX586 CMOS Sensor For Smartphones Announced with highest 48 effective megapixels

Sony has just announced a new image sensor ‘IMX586’ for smartphone. This is a CMOS image sensor offering pixel size of 0.8 μm. So, it is possible to get up to 48 megapixels camera in a smartphones. Sony claims that the new sensor will make it possible to capture beautiful, high-resolution images even with a smartphone.

IMX586 sensor uses Quad Bayer color filter array where adjacent 2×2 pixels come in the same color. So, the new sensor delivers both high sensitivity and high resolution. In low-light, it uses signal from the four adjacent pixels to raise sensitivity to level of 1.6 μm pixels. In this way, it can capture bright, low-noise photos and videos.

It uses Sony exposure control technology and signal processing functionality to offer real-time output and a superior dynamic range. Sony claims that the new sensor offers 4 times greater dynamic range than previous products.

This sensor will enhance the smartphone camera experience. The company will start shipping the sample starting September 2018. So, we can expect the use of this sensor in smartphones by early next year.
