Dolby has announced Dolby Vision 2, a major upgrade to its popular HDR technology that has been the gold standard for picture quality over the past decade. The new version is designed to take full advantage of modern TVs while giving creators more tools to deliver stunning visuals.

Dolby Vision 2 comes with a redesigned image engine. This engine makes better use of the Dolby Vision content ecosystem, which already includes movies, TV shows, live sports, and even games. With new creative tools also on the way, content will look sharper, brighter, and more lifelike on displays that support Dolby Vision 2.

One of the biggest upgrades is Content Intelligence. It is designed to make TVs smarter by adapting the picture automatically to both the content and the environment.

Key features

  • Precision Black: improves dark scenes to avoid the common complaint that pictures look “too dark,” while staying true to the creator’s intent.
  • Light Sense: adjusts the display using ambient light detection and source data to ensure an ideal viewing experience in different lighting conditions.
  • Sports and Gaming Optimization: enhances brightness, color, and motion for fast-paced sports and games.

Dolby Vision 2 also introduces bi-directional tone mapping. This allows creators to fine-tune how modern TVs handle brightness and color, ensuring both artistic vision and the technical strengths of new displays are preserved.

Dolby Vision 2 is not limited to HDR improvements. It brings new features like Authentic Motion, which gives creators more control over how motion is displayed. This helps reduce unwanted judder and makes scenes look more cinematic.

Dolby Vision 2 will be available in two product tiers: Dolby Vision 2 Max and Dolby Vision 2.

  • Dolby Vision 2 Max: for the most advanced TVs, with premium features that unlock the full capabilities of high-end displays.
  • Dolby Vision 2: for mainstream TVs, bringing the core improvements powered by the new image engine and Content Intelligence.

Hisense will be the first TV maker to introduce Dolby Vision 2, powered by the new MediaTek Pentonic 800 chip with MiraVision Pro PQ Engine. Availability details will be shared later.

Meanwhile, CANAL+ will be the first media company to stream movies, TV shows, and live sports in Dolby Vision 2. This partnership shows how quickly the new standard could spread across both hardware and content.
