Samsung Display, display technologies arm of Samsung, has announced an unbreakable display for smartphones. This is a flexible OLED panel fortified by a plastic window. The display has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). It means the display is safe for use in global markets.
According to UL, the display passed the rigorous real-time durability test based on military standards set by the US Department of Defense. The panel survived a drop test administered at nearly 1.2 meters above the ground 26 times in succession without damage to its front, sides or edges. The unbreakable display also survived 1.8M drop test without any signs of damage.
Samsung also released a video to show the unbreakableness of the new display.
“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” explained Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team at Samsung Display.
Back in 2015, Motorola made a similar claim about Droid Turbo 2 (Moto X Force in India) in past. The company claimed that the display won’t crack or shatter for up to 4 years. This phone’s display really survived in several drop tests. Motorola didn’t bring that display again in any phone.
Samsung is not just thinking about using the display for smartphones. It aims to use it on display consoles for automobiles, mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablet PCs for e-learning.
While many people can expect this display in Galaxy Note9, but this is not going to happen. It is because Note 9 has been in production for a while now while display has just been certified. But 2019’s flagship phones may come with this unbreakable screen.
