As promised, OnePlus has pushed the OnePlus 5T’s Face Unlock to OnePlus 5 in new OxygenOS Open Beta 3 update based on Android Oreo. As the feature has come in Beta, it might have some bugs.

Face Unlock is a notable feature on newer OnePlus 5T that allows users to unlock phone quickly. It is not as secure as fingerprint or Apple’s Face ID, so you cannot use it for payments authorization. The Face Unlock on OnePlus 5T is fast and accurate. The feedback is good and it never gave a false positive by the wrong authentication. Still, the feature is purely based on software. So, the company didn’t want to take a risk by adding this unlock for crucial things like payments.

OnePlus Co-Founder Carl confirmed the Face Unlock feature for OnePlus 5 last month. Now we know that the feature is coming very soon but we still have no exact timeline.

If you want to try the feature right now, you need to install the latest Beta 3 on your OnePlus 5 by flashing the new build. OnePlus has provided the official flash guide if you are interested. You can download the ROM and use this guide to flash new ROM on your OnePlus 5. If you are not sure how to do this or afraid of using this, you can wait until the official OTA update

OnePlus 5 was an awesome phone, but OnePlus upgraded it with OnePlus 5T in few months. Most of the OnePlus 5 users were unhappy with this decision. now by bringing the Face Unlock feature to OnePlus 5, the company can offer some relief to disappointed customers.
