Today, Intel officially unveiled its seventh generation of Intel Core ‘i’ processor family dubbed as “Kaby Lake”. Kaby Lake is the revamp of 14nm Skylake processor with few improvements. These news CPUs are of U and Y series which are for thin, light weight and portable devices.

Kaby Lake processor series include dual-core Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, and Intel Core i7 processors and the Intel mobile Core m3 processor. Intel’s Core m5 and Core m7 names for ultra-low-power CPUs have also been deprecated.

Y-series CPUs are rated for 4.5W of power consumption and these can run without any cooling fan. So, it is suitable for tablets and thinnest entry-level laptops. U-series is rated for 15W and will be used in laptops. In U-series processors, base clock speeds range between 2.4 GHz and 2.7 GHz, with boost speeds up to 3.1GHz on the Core i5 and 3.5GHz on the Core i7 processors. For Y-series processors, base speeds range between 1GHz and 1.3GHz, with larger boost between 2.6GHz and 3.6GHz.

Kaby Laye can deliver up to 12 percent faster productivity performance and up to 19 percent faster web performance over the previous 6th generation Intel Core processors.

This processor introduces a new media engine to open up a new world of 4K UHD content. So, devices will allow users to view, create, stream and share 4K UHD content without facing any trouble and heating. Battery performance has also been improved for more refined and expanded user experiences.

Gamers will also see improvements in graphics and performance. Gamers can also use a single cord to plug in an external graphics dock and 4K UHD monitors for top-line gaming performance.

For now, Intel is only launching mobile chips for sleek laptops and tablets. The desktop chips will come later in early next year. We can expect the first computer with Kaby Lake in September of October. Apple can also think of upgrading its MacBook lineup.

“More than 100 different 2 in 1s and laptops powered by 7th Gen Intel Core to be available starting in September,” Intel says.
