Earlier this week, Google launched its video calling app Duo for everyone. This app makes video calling quicker and easier. While it was initially announced for video calls, it seems audio calls are also on the way.

Google’s product lead for communication, Amit Fulay confirmed on G+ that audio-calls on Duo are coming very soon. While no time frame was confirmed, we can expect it to come by the end of this year.

Audio calls are better when you are in a situation when you are on slow Internet connectivity. Sometimes, we are also not in proper place to make video calls. So, this option should be there.

As of now, this app is just for video calls and there is nothing else to offer. Google has another app called “Hangouts” for video calls, audio calls and text messaging. It is still confusing for me what to select for video calls. Google could improve Hangouts with all these features in place of adding another app in our mobile phones.

Google Duo claims to be simple and quicker and yes it is. it also claims to offer better video calling experience. Well, you must try it before you make any perception on that.

WhatsApp and Skype are the two popular options for audio calls. WhatsApp is popular in personal communications while Skype is popular for business related communications. So, Duo audio calls will directly compete with WhatsApp audio calls. Competing with any existing market player can never be successful until you give users a reason to use your product. As an existing hangouts user, I am still figuring out why to use Duo. Why will I drop my WhatsApp calls to use Duo audio calls.

What do you think about this? Have you tried duo? Share your views with us in comments.
