Facebook owned mobile messaging platform Whatsapp just announced to achieve 1 billion users milestone. Company also claims that people share 43 billion messages, 1.6 billion photos and 250 million videos per day on this platform.

This is the long awaited achievement for its CEO Jan Koum. On January 18, Whatsapp had 990 million users. Adding 10 million users in just 2 week seems to be great.

Company also dropped its $0.99 annual fee to attract more users. Although, this fee was rarely charged.

Initially started as a messaging platform, Whatsapp added many features over the years to keep its platform interesting. Now, it has voice calls and group voice call is also rumored to be on the way.

Now after 1 billion users, we all are questioning about its revenue model. Once Mark Zuckerberg said that Whatsapp will be monetized once it has over 1 billion users. Now we are curious to know how Whatsapp will make money. Unlike rival platforms, Whatsapp does not sell stickers or have anything other thing for which it can charge.

Recently, we heard about business profiles. I hope this could be the possible monetization method on Whatsapp. But it will be interesting to see how Whatsapp managed to put advertising without ruining user experience.
