Microsoft Office comes on iPhone; now free for iOS devices and upcoming Android tablet app

Microsoft has today announced the Office app is now free for iOS and Android. Now, you do not need an active Office 365 subscription to edit or store Office documents. But office 365 subscription will still be needed to use more advanced editing features.

“So, starting today, people can create and edit Office content on iPhones, iPads, and soon, Android tablets using Office apps without an Office 365 subscription,” Microsoft announced.

Now office apps including Word, Excel and PowerPoint are available for iPhone with same iPad like experience. But these apps are optimized for iPhone. iPhone users can download these apps for App store.

Microsoft also announced Office for Android tablet. Office for Android tablet preview is available starting today. But general availability is expected early 2015.

Today’s update also delivers the Dropbox integration Microsoft announced two days back. Few new editing features are now also available.

Word, PowerPoint and Excel are very popular apps and important in many ways. Making these apps free will surely increase the number of mobile users. Now Microsoft can expect more iOS and Android users for these apps. With this app, Microsoft will also be able to compete with Apple iWork on iOS and Google’s Drive apps for Android.
