After the launch of Office for iPad, now Microsoft has made Office for Android and iPhone completely free for home use. Now, Office 365 subscription is no longer required for editing documents. You can download the new versions of Office apps directly from Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

Changelog of the apps say:

  • Office Mobile for Android phones is now free for home use.
  • Bug fixes and stability improvements.

Earlier, Office app was available for free but needed Office 365 subscription to edit the documents. Business users still need to have Office 365 subscription.  It will be hard for Microsoft to check who is using it for free or for business. Employees can use apps on personal devices but for business use.

Office for Android can only be installed on devices running on Android 4.0 or higher. For iOS, it supports iOS 7.0 of higher.

Microsoft has made the app available for free to compete with Google and Apple both. Apple’s iWork and Google’s QuickOffice both apps are available for free.

Microsoft has also confirmed that it is working on Office for Android tablets and Metro version for touch-enabled Windows devices
