Smartphone sales in India grew three times in 2013 and reached to over 44 million sales. Local smartphone manufacturers are doing well. In 2012, smartphone sales was only 16.2 million. Report published by IDC also confirmed that India represents more than quarter of global feature phone market.
Samsung is still ruling the market with 38% market share. Micromax is at the second spot with 16% market share. Karbonn and Sony are at third and fourth place with 10% and 5% market share.
In 2013, 20% smartphones were phablet with 5″- 6.99″ screen. Nearly half of the smartphone shilled in India cost less than US $120. High end devices like iPhone has very small market share. India is also one of the fastest growing computer market in terms of smartphone adoption in 2013. Main reason for this is the low cost smartphones availability. Thanks to homegrown smartphone vendors for low cost smartphones.
“The growth in the smartphone market is being propelled by the launch of low-end, cost competitive devices by international and local vendors which are further narrowing the price gaps that exist between feature phones and smartphones”, said Manasi Yadav, Senior Market Analyst with IDC India.
“India was one of the fastest-growing countries worldwide in terms of smartphone adoption in 2013. This surge has been mainly powered by homegrown vendors, which have shown a tremendous and consistent growth over the past four quarters of 2013,” IDC said in a statement.
Worldwide smartphone market also shipped more than 1 billion units in 2013. China has big contribution in these numbers. One of three smartphones was shipped in China in 2013.
